THE LAKES

Lake Ray Hubbard has been a centerpiece of North Texas life since its creation in 1968. Originally known as Forney Lake during its construction, the reservoir was later renamed in honor of Ray Hubbard, a former president of the Dallas Parks and Recreation Board who played a key role in expanding outdoor spaces across the region. Built by damming the East Fork of the Trinity River, the lake was designed to serve as a major water supply for the City of Dallas while also providing flood control. Covering more than 22,000 acres with over 110 miles of shoreline, Lake Ray Hubbard quickly became one of the largest lakes in North Texas. Over the decades, it has grown into a hub for fishing, boating, and recreation, with thriving populations of hybrid striped bass, catfish, crappie, and largemouth bass making it a favorite destination for anglers. Today, the lake remains both a vital resource and a place where families, friends, and fishermen gather to enjoy wide open water and the outdoors.
The lighthouse that stands at The Harbor in Rockwall has become one of the most recognizable symbols of Lake Ray Hubbard. Rising 35 feet above the shoreline with its black lantern room and steady white light, it was completed in 2007 as part of the city’s waterfront development. Designed to be more than decoration, it serves as a true navigational aid for boaters, guiding them safely into the marina while also giving the waterfront a distinctive character.
In 2021, the lighthouse was renamed the Scott Self Lighthouse in honor of Scott Self, a former Rockwall mayor, sailor, and beloved local figure who introduced countless people to Lake Ray Hubbard through his Sail With Scott cruises. After his passing in 2020, the city dedicated the lighthouse to him as a lasting tribute. A plaque now marks the site, ensuring that his contributions to the community and love of the lake are remembered for generations.
